    C Major Piano Arpeggios

The C major arpeggio is built from the notes C, E, and G, all white keys. Let’s look at it in root position and both inversions, and then extend it over more octaves.

      C Major arpeggio overview

The C Major arpeggio in root position

Before playing the C major arpeggio up and down the keyboard, it helps to see it as a chord rather than a long string of notes. What we want in each hand is a single position, one shape the hand learns once and then carries from octave to octave.

That shape is the core position: the group of notes that repeats exactly as we travel up and down the keyboard. Every arpeggio pattern has one, and once it is clear, the rest is mostly a matter of travel.

In root position, the arpeggio starts and ends on C. The core position in the right hand is C-E-G with fingers 1-2-3 (red on the chart below), and in the left hand it is E-G-C with fingers 4-2-1 (blue on the chart). At the bottom of the left hand and the top of the right hand, the 5th finger is added to play the first or last note. These 5th fingers sit outside the core positions (green on the chart), so it helps to think of them as bookends for the arpeggio.

The C Major arpeggio in first inversion

In first inversion, the arpeggio starts and ends on E, the third of the chord. The core position in the right hand is E-G-C with fingers 1-2-4 (red), and in the left hand it is G-C-E with fingers 4-2-1 (blue). The 5th fingers are the bookends again (green), at the bottom for the left hand and at the top for the right.

The C Major arpeggio in second inversion

In second inversion, the arpeggio starts and ends on G, the fifth of the chord. The core position in the right hand is G-C-E with fingers 1-2-4 (red), and in the left hand it is C-E-G with fingers 3-2-1 (blue). Once again, the 5th fingers stay outside the core positions as bookends (green).

To practice the core positions, it helps to break the arpeggio into three steps:

      1. Block out the core positions and play them up and down the keyboard in clusters. This makes the arpeggio easy to see as a single unit of notes that repeats up and down the keyboard.
      2. Play up and down the arpeggio one note at a time, but hold the notes down as we go and pause once each core position is fully down. Then aim and hop to the next core position, placing the hand on all of its notes at once.
      3. Play up and down one note at a time, releasing each finger as the next one plays (legato touch), while keeping the core positions in mind as we travel up and down the piano.

Expand the C Major arpeggio to more octaves

To extend the arpeggio over more octaves, we take the same formulas and add an octave at each end: start one octave lower and keep going one octave higher. The core positions stay the same no matter how many octaves the arpeggio spans, which is why the extra octaves are mostly a matter of repeating what already works. On the four-octave staff, the fingering is written only where the hand moves to a new position.

Avoid common mistakes in the C Major arpeggio

A few mistakes and challenges belong especially to the C major arpeggio:

      • Visual consistency: With only white keys, there are no black keys to show where the hand is, and it is easy to lose track. Keeping the core positions in mind simplifies the layout of the C major arpeggio and makes it much harder to get lost.
      • Sudden jerky movements: The white-key layout can also lead to over-extending on the position changes. Leaning and leading with the whole body in the direction of the arpeggio keeps the motion natural and avoids “chicken wing” arms.
      • Overshooting or undershooting notes: The next note often seems farther away or closer than it actually is. Picturing the entire next core position and aiming for the whole set of notes makes the extensions feel less intimidating.
