    B Diminished Chord

B Diminished piano chord notes diagram

The B Diminished Chord is B, D, and F, all white keys. The notes are close together, the shape is compact, and the sound is tense, leaning toward C. With every note on a white key, it's a good chord for hearing what a diminished sound is before adding any black keys.

B Diminished Chord theory and function

A diminished chord stacks two minor thirds, and the result is tense and unsettled. It is never a place to rest. It behaves like a dominant 7th chord with the root missing, so it wants to move.

The B diminished chord is the leading-tone chord (vii°) in C major. In minor keys, it is the leading-tone chord (vii°) in C minor and the supertonic (ii°) in A minor.

The notes B, D, and F are the top three notes of G7, so the chord leads to C the way G7 does. A common use is as a passing chord over a rising bass line, I – vii°6 – I6: C – B°/D – C/E, so the bass walks C, D, E. Try playing B° and then C and listen to how the tension settles.
