    C-sharp Minor 5-Finger Pattern (C-sharp Minor Position)

The C-sharp minor 5-finger pattern, also called C-sharp minor position, is the first five notes of the C-sharp minor scale, C-sharp, D-sharp, E, F-sharp, and G-sharp, one finger on each key. Let’s look at where it sits on the keyboard and on the staff, and how to practice it so that each finger becomes reliable on its own.

      C-sharp Minor 5-finger pattern overview

Visualize the C-sharp Minor 5-finger pattern layout

The C-sharp minor 5-finger pattern is two black keys, C-sharp and D-sharp, then a single white key, E, then two more black keys, F-sharp and G-sharp. As a terrain, it’s mostly raised: the black keys form the surface, and E is the one dip in it. The hand sits well in toward the fallboard, and that white key is what it finds its place by.

Play the C-sharp Minor 5-finger pattern on the piano

In the right hand, the thumb plays C-sharp and each finger takes the next key up, so the 5th finger lands on G-sharp. The left hand is the mirror image: the 5th finger plays C-sharp and the thumb plays G-sharp. The chart below shows both hands an octave apart, the left hand in blue and the right hand in red.

The black keys sit further back than the white ones, so the hand settles a little further in, with the fingers on C-sharp, D-sharp, F-sharp, and G-sharp reaching forward onto them (1, 2, 4, and 5 in the right hand) while the 3rd finger stays on E.

The notes of the C-sharp Minor 5-finger pattern on the staff

On the staff, the five notes, C-sharp, D-sharp, E, F-sharp, and G-sharp, climb by step, moving from line to space to line, with the right hand in the treble clef and the left hand an octave lower in the bass clef. Here each sharp is written beside its note, so C-sharp, D-sharp, F-sharp, and G-sharp show up directly on the staff.

Next, the pattern as we’ll practice it: up to G-sharp and back down, one note per beat, ending on a whole note. The fingering above the right hand runs 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1, and below the left hand 5-4-3-2-1-2-3-4-5. The two hands play the same notes an octave apart, but only on E do they use the same finger, the 3rd. In this version the sharps move into the key signature at the start of each staff, as they would in a piece in C-sharp minor.

Practice the C-sharp Minor 5-finger pattern

The pattern is short enough that the difficulty is not in the notes. What tends to go wrong is evenness: the thumb lands heavily, the 4th and 5th fingers come out softer and a little late, and the line has bumps in it. Let’s work on it in a few stages.

      • The step from E to F-sharp: In C-sharp minor this is where the line most often bumps: the right hand’s 4th finger reaches forward onto a black key right after the 3rd plays a white one, and the left hand meets the same step with 3 and 2. Playing just E–F-sharp–E a few times (right hand 3-4-3, left hand 3-2-3) before the whole pattern helps that step even out.
      • Hands separately, slowly: We play each hand on its own at a slow, steady pulse, listening for five notes of equal weight. If one note stands out, we play just that finger and its neighbors until the difference evens out.
      • Fingers resting on the keys: With all five fingers on their keys, we play one finger at a time while the others stay in light contact with the surface. This shows which fingers tend to lift or tighten when they aren’t playing.
      • Hands together: Once each hand is steady, we put them together. The right hand plays 1 while the left plays 5, so following the fingering of one hand and letting the other follow by ear tends to work better than tracking both at once.
      • Changing the touch: When the notes feel even, we try the pattern legato, then staccato, then with a small crescendo to the top and a diminuendo back down. Each version asks the fingers for a different kind of control.

Avoid common mistakes in the C-sharp Minor 5-finger pattern

A few things tend to go wrong in the C-sharp minor 5-finger pattern:

      • Collapsing fingers: As a finger presses, its end joint tends to buckle, the 5th finger most of all. Keeping a slightly rounded shape and letting the weight come from the arm, rather than pushing with the finger, gives the note a fuller sound.
      • Heavy thumbs: The thumb plays on its side and is naturally stronger, so C-sharp in the right hand and G-sharp in the left often come out louder than the rest. Lightening the thumb, rather than forcing the other fingers, is usually what evens the line out.
      • Rushing the top: The turn at G-sharp comes quickly, and the pattern often speeds up into it. Giving the top note its full beat before turning around keeps the pulse steady.
      • Mixing up major and minor: On the keyboard, the C-sharp minor pattern and the D-flat major pattern differ only in the middle note, under the 3rd finger: E here, F in D-flat major (D-flat major is spelled with flats). After practicing one, it is easy to slip into the other, so listening for the color of that middle note each time keeps them apart.
